Adware - MyWebSearch
MyWebSearch is an example of an Adware, this software is not to be mistaken with a virus or a Trojan but should still be regarded as dangerous and an unwanted program. This is one of the most common adware programs I find infecting computers.
Many of these Adware or malware programs appear to be from legitimate companies and have some beneficial purpose, like a toolbar, translation utility or registry cleaner but they alter the security of the computer and even compromise the privacy of the infected system. They pose a security threat should be removed as soon as possible.
MyWebSearch Toolbar is a program that facilitates the delivery of advertising content to the user and in some cases may gather information from the user's computer, including information related to Internet browser usage and other computer habits. It monopolizes the computer system’s resources slowing the computer down and is largely responsible for the countless pop-up advertisements the user will be bombarded with. In many cases its also responsible for downloading countless other programs most of which are infected with virus’s, Trojans and adware.
MyWebSearch Toolbar is often bundled with or embedded within freeware programs like such as clocks, messengers, alerts, weather, and greetings cards and so on. To avoid any unneeded risks or damage to your computer system, it is highly recommended that you check very carefully which options are selected when you install new software or updates. If you are offered a free toolbar or other utility then untick the option – You DO NOT want it.
If you are worried then make use of a reliable and legitimate anti-spyware application like Malwarebytes, to remove MyWebSearch and all its components from the infected computer system. (www.malwarebytes.org – free program).
If your computer has been infected with this malicious software, it is recommended that you remove it immediately.
How to avoid fake Download buttons
You know the old saying, "Look before you leap"? Let's give that a modern-day twist: Look before you click.
See that screenshot up top? It's from popular download site Download.com. On the top left is the real download button, but there's another Start Download button at the bottom of the page, this is a fake download.
The fake “Start Download” is part of an advert for another program entirely, a registry cleaner. As I mentioned above Registry Cleaners are very dangerous many are infected or extremely poorly written meaning they can damage Windows and in some cases crash windows completely.
This is an increasingly common tactic among advertisers and even spyware distributors: ads that masquerade as Download buttons. When you're looking at a download page for any given piece of software, your eye naturally goes to the large, colorful button that plainly says "Download"--and your mouse pointer instinctively follows.
But that can lead to big trouble: spyware, viruses, and other system-clogging junk.
